BUPA – Bereavement Fact Sheet

Published by BUPA's Health Information Team February 2004
Bereavement means, literally, to be deprived by death. After someone close to you dies, you go through a process of mourning. Numbness, anger and sadness can all be part of that process. Bereavement can also cause physical reactions including sleeplessness, loss of energy and loss of appetite.

Pathway Through Grief

There are over half a million deaths each year in the UK. Every death in the UK is required to be certified by a medical practitioner and for most deaths there has been more health-service input than just the signing of a certificate. This raises major issues for healthcare planners and staff.

Pathways Through Grief hold an annual conference addressing these important issues, in a series of keynote addresses and through selected workshops and seminars.

Lasting Post

Lasting Post has four parts. Planning Ahead helps you make personal arrangements for use after your death. The When Death Occurs section assists you and your family after the death of a loved one. Announcements enables you to post a notice of death and Everlasting Post is where tributes and enduring memorials can be created.

Mesothelioma

The Mesothelioma Center is an up-to-date resource for all mesothelioma issues ranging from mesothelioma statistics to diagnosis options.  Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer. One of the primary mesothelioma causes is asbestos exposure. The cancer develops in the mesothelium, a protective membrane that lines three body cavities: the thoracic cavity (pleura), abdominal cavity (peritoneum) and the heart sac (pericardium). Extensive studies and mesothelioma clinical trials are in progress internationally and cancer specialists and doctors are constantly working towards the discovery of a cure.
